Everything But...

Television opens up the world to us in so many ways. Sometimes the commercials are even more appealing than the programs. Through commercials and infomercials viewers are invited into the world of material things. All of these things seem to have a magical power that will radically change our lives for the better – and they are available to us as long as we have the money or credit to purchase them. The glossy, snappy, sometimes humorous ads grab us in such a way that we come to believe the product has truly magical qualities for us. We all yearn for the time when our lives are rich and full and we can finally sit back, relax and enjoy the happiness we have found in all of our material treasures. Unfortunately, though, we cannot take any of our material possessions with us when we die – which is a certainty for all of us. The reality is that when we die our possessions will be left behind. Being rich does not equal having many possessions.

How, then, do we enrich our lives starting right now, today? Our lives become rich through relationships with others rather than through isolation, self-centeredness and greed. Developing relationships with those like and unlike ourselves can bring us unimaginable and immeasurable richness.

Purposefully making room in our lives for God also gives our lives richness. Just look out the window, go for a walk or sit on the lawn and look… and listen… and smell the richness of creation all around you. We do not need money to enjoy God’s gifts to us. Open your heart to the beauty and the mystery of God and God’s love for you. Feel free to embrace and enjoy the richness that is yours today.
